Color field PAINTINGs

Statement from the Artist: 

  when less is more . . .

Color field paintings are distinguished by the application of thinned paint in large expanses of unbroken color.  Visible brushmarks and gestural or action-based mark-making are deprioritized in favor of solid fields of color and flat (two-dimensional) painting surfaces. 

My earlier work in gestural and lyrical abstraction often elicited viewer commentary about the experiential and quality of my color palettes.  I was drawn to this area of practice for the opportunity to explore and celebrate color as foremost subject rather than artistic element.  I am challenging the traditional definition of what constitutes a color field painting through my use of color gradients, layering, and/or dimensional surfaces.
